The global ognitive radio market is expected to develop USD 24.69 billion by 2030, at a compound annual increase in price (CAGR) of 18.6% throughout the forecast period.
Overview
Cognitive radio is wireless communication technology that searches for available communication channels in the wireless spectrum and changes transmission parameters by enabling more communication channels to run simultaneously. This ultimately improves the available radio-frequency (RF) spectrum usage and decreases interference to other users.
Cognitive radio uses technologies such as Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Adaptive Radio. In SDR, conventional hardware components such as modulators, mixers, and amplifiers are replaced with intelligent software and in Adaptive Radio, the communication system records, analyses, and modifies its own performance. Cognitive radio helps to overcome the scarcity of radio spectrum, provides better quality of service, and improves satellite communication.
Key Market Drivers and Restraints:
Rising adoption of 5G technology
Increasing the adoption of 5G technology in developed economies has created a lucrative opportunity for the cognitive radio market. The major applications of cognitive radio are to enable unlicensed users to access the spectrum and integrate different technologies within the system. Cognitive radio and 5G both technologies have some similar characteristics. 5G integrates various wireless technologies whereas CR (cognitive radio) is capable of self-integration in the field of wireless technology. This factor makes cognitive radio suitable for use as a 5G terminal that has the capability to work with various types of wireless systems and adhere to different models at the same time. 5G terminals support several data types with enhanced quality of service.
Security concern
Due to the nature of open and random access environment of cognitive radio networks, spectrum-sensing technology within cognitive radio allows unlicensed secondary users to use the communication channel that is not used by licensed primary users, which further create security threat and challenges for the existing network. This enables some malicious users to access the cognitive network randomly and launch some serious attacks such as a denial of service, primary user emulation, or falsifying data, which will cause severe damage to the cognitive radio network. This access method is also vulnerable to the conventional security threats including tempering, eavesdropping, forgery, and non-cooperation of a cognitive radio network.
Key Application:
Spectrum sensing application holds the largest market share
Spectrum sensing, spectrum analysis, spectrum allocation, location tracking, and cognitive routing are some of the applications analyzed in this market. Among these, the spectrum sensing application is anticipated to have the largest market share during the analysis period. Movement of licensed primary users, observing and updating the spectrum status, etc. by periodically sensing the frequency band is some of the features of spectrum sensing application. This enables the transceiver of cognitive radio to sense any idle spectrum at a certain time, location or band.
Regional Market Scenario:
Asia-Pacific will be the fastest region in terms of CAGR in this market
Geographic regions included in the global cognitive radio market study are North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa, and South America along with its major countries. Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing region in the given analysis period. Increasing the growth of mobile networks due to the rise of 5G technology, growing demand for improved spectrum allocation and utilization, and rising growth in data traffic across multiple end-use industries are some of the major factors propelling the growth of the cognitive radio market in the Asia Pacific region.
Major countries in the region such as China, India, etc. are focusing on developing and deploying 5G wireless technology and its infrastructure, in order to cater to the surging demand. For instance, recently three major telecom operators in China have rolled out 5G wireless technology within the country. China will be among the major adopters of 5G services with more than 170 million 5G subscribers by next year.
