Nowadays, folding smartphones are getting very popular. Huawei and Samsung are showing their thoughts of folding smartphone at MWC 2019. Oppo has tormented the trial product that is equivalent to the Huawei Mate X whereas Xiaomi is going the step ahead and presented the prototype with a double folding display. It looks like the dual fold implementation of Xiaomi has taken the attention of Google, resulting in the company to attempt the dual folding concept of ‘modern computing device’. The invention was done by Patently Mobile through the authoritatively trailed patent.
Thus far, the patent is mostly indicating the modern computing device and not the smartphone. Thus, there are wide chances that the patent can be just documenting Google’s thought of folding device. Or else, Google can be referring to folding smartphones as the modern computing device because of the assortment of functionality that is brought with a folding phone itself. On the other hand, a technology that is depicted by Google is dissimilar from all the application.
In the same way of Xiaomi’s implementation, Google is working for the concept of the dual folding device where the display is folded at two points. On the other hand, Google’s concept is going for different method as compared to Xiaomi’s. The concept of Google has the Z-folding screen, where the screen will fold in the ‘Z’ shape. There is certainly a disadvantage to the folding design where the gap in the panels at the bend point is strikingly big. The optimistic side of implementation is that the device can be almost folded to half of its size.
For covering the gap, the concept of Google aligns the section of non-folding of the display in a manner that the complete form of the device appears very uniform. This concept is not the same as Xiaomi as shown in the video. The dual folding device of Xiaomi is folding outward as similar to Huawei Mate X where the display folds out from several sides. On comparing the implementation, design of Google can assist in safeguarding the display where the device is not used.
As the folding screens are made of plastic, the design of Google will make more sense. Not like Huawei and Samsung, Google outsources the production of third-party vendors. Though, Android Q is getting support for folding screens, as it looks that Google can be getting serious regarding the folding devices. As Huawei and Samsung are playing the major role in folding the smartphone industry, as Google catches up and reveals its own revenue on the foldable smart device.
