Ukrainian presidential candidate Volodymyr Zelensky, won the first round of national elections as per the results issued by the Central Election Commission, of the country on Monday.
With more than 90% of the result of Sunday's vote counted, Zelensky, a debutant in politics had 30.3% of the votes cast. He is a popular face on the television and is known for his protest comments among the youth citizens.
Zelensky is expecting that his life replicates art as he is in the star cast of "Servant of the People" -- a Ukrainian television series now available on Netflix.
However if he fails to achieve the 50% threshold to win the vote outright, there was would be a second round off on April 21. The president Petro Potoshenko has secured the second place and has almost 16% of vote, the earlier Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko got 13.4% votes. These figures are after initial testing and results.
Poroshenko spoke to the younger voters via Twitter on Sunday he wrote, "I would like to appeal to the young generation separately today, you see changes in the country, but you want them to be faster, deeper and more qualitative. I understood the motives of your protest. I heard you." He further added "It is up to you, Ukrainians, to decide which course the country will take, who will be the supreme commander, who will represent Ukraine in international meetings with Western leaders, and in conversations with Moscow,".
Citizens of Ukraine after a period of 5 years during which they were bound by the proxy war with Russia. During 2014, various Russian troops had annexed the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, thus fueling Moscow and leading to a separatist conflict in region of eastern Ukraine's Donbas region.
As pre the estimates of United Nations, as of February 15, the fight has claimed almost 13,000 lives. Among them 3,321 are expected to be civilian deaths and approximately 9,500 combatants killed.
During his campaign, Poroshenko emphasized on his ability to play tough with Russia. In a strong statement issued last week on Twitter, he mentioned "When asked who is my ally, with whom I am ready to unite and coordinate my actions, I answer: my ally is the Ukrainian people and who is my opponent? I am not ashamed to say it openly -- this opponent is Putin."
At present it seems the Ukraine’s are preferring and opting for the comedian as their prospective leader and ditching the conventional ones.
